A car mechanic was removing a cylinder head when he spotted a well-known cardiologist in his garage.

The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come and take a look at his car
when the mechanic shouted across the garage, hey Doc, want to take a look at this?

The cardiologist, a bit surprised walked over to where the mechanic was working. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and said, so Doc, look at this engine. I opened its heart, took the valves out, repaired or replaced anything damaged, and then put everything back in, and when I finished, it worked just like new. So how is it that I make £25,000 a year and you make £1M when you and I are basically doing the same work?

The cardiologist paused, leaned over, and then whispered to the mechanic, try doing it with the engine running!

8th January 2016

Hi to all fellow members of the King’s Lynn Capri Club.

We are the newbie’s, Ian and Carol Budd, from Lincolnshire. Firstly, thanks to Charlie for guiding us through the membership process.

Carol and I are Capri fans and between us we have owned various Capri’s over the years.

We hope we can bring something to the club of interest to the members and assist with our varied knowledge of bodywork and trim if ever needed.

My past history with cars has been from the late seventies, starting with the custom cars of the day, and many years working for Ford at the design centre at Dunton, Essex where I even stood next to the Capri replacement that was dropped in favour of the XR4. I have many tales of those days that I will share over the coming months.

I love Capri’s that have had body mods of some sort, but Carol loves a factory standard car. I am restoring her Laser at the moment and can announce I am under threat of much pain and many hours of house work chores if I step out of line with the restoration (shame as Zakspeed body kits are now very affordable)! Every Capri she has owned to date I have managed to alter – until now it appears!

We are looking forward to meeting you all as soon as we can.

Ian’s Mk1 3.1 pre-restoration

No doubt there will be some stories to tell so be sure to check this site for updates.

For everyday car enthusiasts can there really be a better marque than Ford? Over the years this manufacturer has produced cheap, useable everyday cars for the masses along with numerous sport biased models and of course the RS badged and limited run productions for the more discerning consumer. Today, whether buying a Mk1 Fiesta 1.1L as an entry into classic car ownership, or adding something like a Sierra Cosworth RS500 to a prized collection, there really is something for everyone and every budget, and if recent auction prices are anything to go by, they represent a great investment too. Silverstone Auctions recently auctioned a number of cars with some eye-watering sale prices:

1978 Ford Capri 3.0s, pre-production model – £23,625
1970 Ford Capri RS 2600 – £25,875
1974 Ford Capri RS 3100 – £48,375
1966 Lotus Cortina Mk1 – £50,625
1985 Ford Escort RS Turbo Series 1 – £60,188
1987 Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 – £90,000

10th November 2015

14th July 2015

The humble Ford Capri has been listed in the top five cars that experienced the greatest rise in value in 2014, according to Hagerty International. There is new money coming into the classic car market and many first-time buyers are attracted to 1970’s and 1980’s cars; typically being in their mid-40’s, its cars from these decades that they lusted after as teenagers, and values of these cars are driven as much by what people like the look of or what they used to see on TV as anything else – the factors that have traditionally been used to determine classic car values don’t seem to apply any more.

According to Max Warburton, an analyst and 1980s sports car owner and enthusiast, ‘very few of these cars have real motorsport heritage. Many were built in large numbers. But they’re still what men in their 40’s want to buy and celebrate’.

1980’s classics are very attractive as first classic cars due to an almost perfect mix of engineering simplicity and motoring comfort. By the ‘80s, cars had many of the features we would expect on a modern car: effective heaters, proper weather proofing, reliable engines and good brakes. But they are also (mostly) devoid of the complex engine management systems that became ubiquitous in the 1990’s. These characteristics mean that they are easy to drive, and if you want to have a tinker under the bonnet, you will still be able to find something under there which resembles an internal combustion engine.

Looking at the regular auction sites and classified ad’s the humble ford Capri is commanding forever higher prices, with later Mk3 models now fetching in excess of £20,000 for top condition cars, with sharp rises in prices for original and unmolested Mk1’s and Mk2’s.

The top five cars that experienced the greatest increase in value in 2014 are:

Over £100,000: Lamborghini Countach LP400S
Value in 2013: £105,000
Value now: £229,000
Increase: 118%

£70,000 to £100,000: Ferrari 308GTS Spyder
Value in 2013: £24,000
Value now: £72,000
Increase: 200%

£40,000 to £69,999: Porsche 911E 2.4
Value in 2013: £23,775
Value now: £51,700
Increase: 118%

£20,000 to £39,999: BMW E30 M3
Value in 2013: £10,450
Value now: £24,000
Increase: 130%

Under £19,999: Ford Capri 1300 Mk1
Value in 2013: £2950
Value now: £10,700
Increase: 262%

The sharpest rise in the group is reserved not for an unobtainable supercar, but for a standard daily driver that would have been seen all over Britain’s roads in the early 1970s. The Capri’s fastback profile created an exotic contrast with the other mass-produced cars of the era, and the design is now regarded as a true classic. Unloved for many years, huge numbers were left to rot and good examples are now highly sought-after.

The Ford Capri – soon to be an unobtainable classic reserved for the richest in society (maybe…)
